Guido,

Good luck to you! Start by taking small steps, even if it's just starting by making the choice to be more active everyday :-) Also, write down specific goals you'd like to achieve and keep them close at hand to constantly remind yourself about them!

My problem is stress eating and lack of exercise. I'm ready to give it a go again, so thanks for the site.

If you're a coffee drinker be sure to read the discussion on the forum above. Leonard posted a great question, and we have some great insight from Derek, and I added my thoughts as well!

Stick with whole grain based carbs that are not enriched, bleached, or processed. Not only will they have more fiber to keep you fuller longer, but you will also keep your blood sugar levels more stable as they will absorb more slowly, which will ward off hunger cravings.

I believe it is just a myth that there are "bad" carbs. It's really all about portion control with them and exercise. If you're eating carbs for energy, and expending that energy, it doesn't matter what kind you are taking in. I like Jasmine and Basmati rice myself, they break up the monotony of food and add flavor/aroma to the meal!

Speaking of carbs. I like most whole grain carbs except for brown rice. Try as I may, I just don't like it. I love Basmati rice and Jasmine rice because they have the great aromatic flavors. Are these considered a "bad" carb? I eat them and have continued to lose weight. I like wheat bulgar, couscous, oats, etc. but I just don't care for brown rice. I avoid plain white rice.

Some advice I have about eating habits:
I believe that we have evolved over the last few thousand years depending on where our ancestors came from in the world.
I always tell clients, friends, and family to read "Eat Right 4 Your Type" book series. Depending on your blood type and ancestral geography, you may not being ingesting what your body needs.

For Example:
O blood types are usually from coastal regions, eating fresh meat and light fruits. They usually had low carbohydrate diets due to not being very agricultural.

A blood types are from inner countries that were more agricultural, therefore living on a higher carbohydrate count and lower fresh meats.

I am a type O. Therefore I eat a higher protein diet: fish, light red meat, and tofu. I ingest fruits and leafy veggies. But I crave pasta, bread, and root vegetables. Those are in turn, harder for my body to digest and they release endorphins. Since my body doesn't digest them at a fast rate, they usually turn into fat.

Just some "FOOD" for thought. LOL

I wouldn't suggest a low carb diet. Carbs are essentially for the body especially the brain (did you have trouble concentrating? were you irritable?).

Yes, a low carb diet will help you to lose weight, but generally it's not always fat and when you go back to your normal diet you will gain more weight back because you have slowed down your metabolism.

I always suggest learning how to eat healthier and learn how to make your own choices when it comes to food rather than relying on a diet. It's a long term lifestyle change so why not start learning now?

When you start eating healthier you will get your fiber. By eating more fruits, veggies, and whole grains it's real easy to get that daily amount. Even then if you're still having trouble beans can go along way to boosting fiber intake.

If you need more healthy eating tips I would suggest visiting my site at www.foxfitness.com a free healthy eating e-book or stop into one of my free grocery tours!

I tried the Adkins diet a couple of years ago. I lost some weight, but I was craving carbs like you would not believe. I remember craving white toast with butter and jelly... Is the low carb diet safe? I know there are no shortcuts to smaller portions and exercise, but I'm trying to strike a balance between low-carb and right-carb now. I'm also trying to increase my fiber. Apparently teh average American only gets 1/10th the amount of fiber that we really need. (And iceberg lettuce doesn't count as fiber as I found out).
