Members Helping Members - Working, Sharing, Contributing

There has been some discussion amongst some of the members of EOK about creating some stock photos for EOK members in and around the Knoxville area.

I would like to expand on this idea.

Here's what I am thinking. How about getting a photographer(s) together and planning a few shoots around town. Compile a dozen stock photos for EOK members to use free of charge on their websites and other marketing materials.

EOK members could promote the photographer's business where ever the EOK member uses the stock photos, and the photographer could possibly create a revenue stream from this association.

My knowledge of professional photography is quite limited, but I think there could be an opportunity to start a business specializing in high quality photos in and around the Knoxville area.

Thoughts?

We do have a group setup for photographers...http://www.eokhq.com/group/photographers

We need a hosting area for the photos...we could use one of the existing photo sites like snapfish, dotphoto, smugmug, or we could roll our own.

My recommendation is for EOK to purchase an account at smugmug (my personal favorite) and allow members of the photographers group to post their content there. The profit from the sales of the photos would be divided between the photographers and EOK.

A graphic designer would be a nice addition to this group and could benefit the same as the photographers for designing the photo site.

Great idea. I will contact those in the group and see if I can set up an "Event" for them.

This is a great idea!! Let me know if I can help out. I'm not a photographer, but any other way I can pitch in, I'd be happy to!

Ive recently scanned some pics mostly from East Tennessee and compiled them into paired images on a couple of collages, let me know what you think. Thanks.

Like the idea as well... would definitely recommend www.lorihensley.com as one of the photographers, not just because she is fam. but she is good. Here is one shot of Knoxville.

Wow what a great photo... I have alot of experience with photography and alot of equipment so its an interesting idea for me. I think that actually people could submit their photos to istockphoto.com to get a royalty on these photos and possibly share with EOK on the proceeds. I have a friend that has a few photos up on istock and he makes a few hundred bucks a month from royalties because one of his photos is really popular. Just a thought.

Wouldn't we make more money for the photographers if we created and managed photo hosting/purchasing application? I think we could put it together fairly easily.

My sister actually started a company called NYImage.com when she lived in NYC. She opened and did the trade show stuff and marketed in all the photo magazines and had over 15,000 exclusive photos of New York City and surrounding areas. ... Sadly the business failed because of the big sites like Getty and IStockphoto are so big and so much content that its hard to make sales with niche geographic markets. Now the possibility of doing it is much lower ... you could probably get an off the shelf type of software that would run the site instead of customizing it like she did. I just thought since there are already huge amounts of traffic through Istockphoto that you would probably get more exposure than setting up your own site. JMO :)

Yeah, Matt is right about the niche being too small to compete. :-/

The real question is which big guy/company do you want to work with. And where will the images be used more (web, print, etc.) -

Elliott has navigated these waters and has experience with both iStockphoto and SmugMug.

Matt, I'd love to see some of your work! :-)

cheers,
renee

Sounds good to me; I love being surrounded by smart people who have been-there-done-that! Let's get busy taking pictures.

Elliott has admin rights to create events; let's get a shoot date/time/location on the calendar.
